Sophie Marceau was born on November 17, 1966 in Paris, France. Her birth name is Sophie Dani�le Sylvie Maupu. She grew up in Gentilly, in the Paris suburbs, and her father was a truck driver.

When Sophie was 14 she learned from one of her friends that Claude Pinoteau, a french movie director, was looking for new faces for a teenagers movie called "La Boum" (1980). This movie was a success. She played in "La Boum 2" (1982) then she bought back her contract with Gaumont when she was sixteen years old for one milion french francs.

Sophie was awarded the Cesar of Best Feminine Hope for "La Boum 2" in 1983, Elected Romantic actress for "Chouans!" (1988) at the Festival international du film romantique (International Festival of Romantic Movie) of Cabourg in 1988, and awarded Moliere of the Best Theatrical Revelation for "Eurydice et Pygmalion" in 1994.

Sophie Marceau has two children. Her first son Vincent was born in 1995 with Polish director Andrzej Zulawski. Her second child, Juliette, was born in 2002 with producer Jim Lemley.
