Scarlett's father, Karsten, was born in Denmark, while her mother Melanie comes from a Bronx-bred family of Polish descent. She has an older brother and sister and a twin brother.
Scarlett divides her time between New York with her father and Los Angeles with her mother, who looks out for her interests there. Scarlett is the only actor in the family, something she's wanted to be since she was three.

Scarlett's acting career began when she was eight in the off-Broadway production of Sophistry with Ethan Hawke. She has been in seven movies, the first was "North" (1994). For her role as Manny in "Manny & Lo" (1996) Scarlett was nominated as Best Actress by the Independent Spirit Awards. As Grace, she won a Hollywood Reporter Young Star Award in 1998, for her role in "The Horse Whisperer" (1998).

Scarlett Johansson applied to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts for the fall 2003 semester, but was not accepted. The rejection allowed Scarlett to focus on her career, which blossomed soon after.
