Natalie Portman was born on June 9, 1981 in Jerusalem, Israel. Her birth
name is Natalie Hershlag
Natalie left Israel for Washington when she was still very young. After a few
more moves, her family finally settled in New York.
When Natalie was 11 years old, she was discovered by a Revlon Cosmetics rep in a
New York pizza parlor. She used this to start off her acting career.
Natalie caught the attention of critics by playing a hitman's apprentice in her
film debut "L�on" (1994). Following this role Natalie had roles in such films as
"Heat" (1995), "Beautiful Girls" (1996) and "Mars Attacks!" (1996).
In 1997, Natalie played the title role in "The Diary of Anne Frank" on Broadway.
The play was a critical success and Natalie was praised for giving the character
a fresh interpretation.
Natalie became a leading lady when she landed the role of Queen/Senator Amidala
for "Star Wars" episodes I, II, and III.
Natalie Portman hesitantly shot an explicit nude scene for "Closer" (2004), in
the scene where she strips for Clive Owen. Ultimately, Natalie and director Mike
Nichols agreed not to use it, as the scene was effective enough without it.
